Russian Ballet Star Vladimir Shklyarov Dead at 39 After Tragic Fall

The world of ballet is mourning the loss of Vladimir Shklyarov, a celebrated principal dancer of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, who tragically passed away at age 39 after falling from a fifth-floor balcony on Saturday.

Shklyarov, regarded as one of the most brilliant dancers of his generation, was widely praised for his performances in iconic productions such as Swan LakeSleeping BeautyRomeo and Juliet, and Don Quixote. His death, described as an “immeasurable loss” by the Mariinsky Theatre, has left the global ballet community in shock. Fellow Mariinsky principal Diana Vishneva shared an emotional tribute, calling him “a favorite partner of countless ballerinas” and a “once-in-a-generation talent.”

Russian state media reports that Shklyarov’s death has been ruled an accident. According to The Guardian, the dancer had gone onto his narrow balcony to get fresh air and smoke but tragically lost his balance and fell.

The timing adds a layer of heartbreak: Shklyarov was just days away from undergoing complex spinal surgery to address severe chronic pain. Reports indicate he had been using strong painkillers in the lead-up to the accident, raising questions about whether his condition may have played a role.

Shklyarov is survived by his wife, fellow Mariinsky dancer Maria Shirinkina, and their two children.

While Shklyarov’s passing has shocked the ballet world, it also highlights the devastating consequences of falls from significant heights. Such accidents often lead to severe injuries, permanent disability, or even death. While this incident appears accidental, slip-and-fall accidents in everyday life—whether at work, in public spaces, or in residential settings—are a leading cause of injuries, including traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, fractures, and internal trauma.
