Kentucky Motel Ordered to Pay $2M After Fatal Scalding Shower Incident

A Kentucky motel has been ordered to pay $2 million to the estate of Alex Chronis, a 76-year-old man who died months after being severely burned by scalding water from a shower in his motel room. The jury’s verdict comes after Chronis sustained third-degree burns on November 19, 2021, at the Econo Lodge in Erlanger, Kentucky, leading to his untimely death on June 19, 2022.

Chronis, a food vendor visiting the Cincinnati region for work, was attempting to take a shower when he was suddenly hit with scalding hot water, knocking him to the floor. The water temperature, which exceeded 150 degrees, continued to burn him as he lay in the shower tub, according to the lawsuit filed by his niece. His screams alerted two associates who came to his aid.

The family’s attorney, N. Jeffrey Blankenship, highlighted that most adults suffer third-degree burns if exposed to 150-degree water for just two seconds, citing the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Despite initially using nonprescription medicine for his burns and attempting to continue his work at a local festival, Chronis’ condition worsened, necessitating hospitalization and skin graft surgery. He spent nearly five months in the hospital and was later transferred to a rehabilitation facility in Knoxville, Tennessee. Despite numerous medical procedures and enduring significant pain, Chronis died from his injuries.

The jury found the motel owner, Sanjay Patel, failed to maintain the motel in a reasonably safe condition for guests. Patel’s company, Aspyn, LLC, which operates the Econo Lodge, was also named in the lawsuit. The judgment awarded Chronis’ estate nearly $1.3 million for medical expenses, $250,000 for pain and suffering, over $16,000 for funeral costs, and $500,000 in punitive damages.

This case underscores the severe consequences of neglecting safety standards in hospitality settings. Slip and fall accidents, especially those involving hazardous conditions like extreme water temperatures, can result in severe injuries or even wrongful death.
