Train Bassist Charlie Colin Dead at 58 After Slipping and Falling in the Shower

Charlie Colin, bassist and founding member of the band Train, has passed away at the age of 58. Colin’s sister, Carolyn Stephens, confirmed his death on Wednesday to The Associated Press. According to reports from TMZ, Colin died after slipping and falling in the shower while house-sitting for a friend in Brussels.

Colin was in Brussels teaching a master class at a conservatory and working on music for an upcoming film. Despite his professional commitments in Europe, Colin’s roots were firmly planted in Southern California, where he grew up before attending Berklee College of Music in Boston. It was at Berklee where he first began playing bass in a group called Apostles alongside guitarist Jimmy Stafford and singer Rob Hotchkiss. After Apostles disbanded, Colin, Stafford, and Hotchkiss moved to San Francisco and formed Train in the early 1990s with lead singer Pat Monahan.

Train achieved significant success with hits like “Meet Virginia,” “Drops of Jupiter,” “Hey, Soul Sister,” and “Marry Me.” However, Colin’s journey with the band was cut short in 2003 when he left after struggling with substance abuse issues. “Charlie is one incredible bass player, but he was in a lot of pain, and the way he was dealing with it was very painful for everyone else around him,” Monahan told NBC San Diego in 2017.
