Fiery 3-car Crash Causes Two Fatalities on I-680 Near San Ramon

On August 12, 2012, two people were killed in a three-car wrongful death crash at 1:20 a.m. in the early morning that sparked a car fire on Interstate Highway 680 at the Crow Canyon Road freeway off-ramp in San Ramon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A man was speeding when he caused an auto accident into a BMW convertible with a man and woman inside.

Both cars hit a large forklift and a pickup parked in a nearby Caltrans construction zone.

One of the vehicles involved started leaking gas after the car accident and the car blamed for the incident caught fire. Multiple passengers were reported to have be trapped in the vehicle that caught fire, according to the CHP.

Two people were declared dead at the scene, and a third was taken to a hospital with major personal injuries, CHP reported.

After the fatal accident, at around 5:40 a.m., there was a second accident: A car passing through the lane closures struck a parked, empty Caltrans truck.  No Caltrans workers were injured in either accident.

CHP says the driver in this second crash had minor personal injuries.
