A heart-stopping moment unfolded during the men’s steeplechase at the Paris 2024 Olympics as Ethiopian track star Lamecha Girma, a world record holder and Olympic silver medalist, took a devastating fall that left him motionless on the track. The terrifying incident occurred during the final lap of the 3000m race on Wednesday, when Girma, caught in a crowded pack, misjudged one of the last hurdles. His right leg struck the obstacle, sending him crashing to the ground, with the impact forcefully striking his back, neck, and head.
As Girma lay motionless, fellow competitors scrambled to avoid him, while the crowd watched in stunned silence. Medical personnel quickly rushed to his aid, placing the 23-year-old in a neck brace and stretchered him off the track. He was immediately transported to Pitié Salpêtrière Hospital, where he spent the night under observation.
